Many patients have both vision insurance and medical insurance. Optometry is one of the few professions that can bill both types. The two are entirely different in the services they cover and the administration of their benefits. We feel it is important for our patients to understand these differences. Coverage via a vision plan is designed to determine a prescription for eye glasses or contact lenses and to evaluate generally healthy eyes. It is not designed to cover conditions where a medical diagnosis exists.
When an urgent medical condition presents, it is necessary to file your examination with your medical coverage and you will be responsible for your medical insurance co-pays and non-covered services. These fees are due on the date of service and must be paid in full. Please be advised that these billing practices are mandated by the insurance industry. In the event that we do not participate with your vision or medical insurance, we will provide you with an itemized receipt in which you may file with your insurance carrier. We are available to answer any questions to eliminate confusion about your coverage.
